His paternal grandfather, the Late Adam Ibrahim Lakhani, served as Judicial Magistrate for the princely state of Junagadh before the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. Following partition, he migrated to Karachi and established M/s M.A.I. Lakhani & Co. — a firm that would become a cornerstone of Pakistan's legal landscape.
In 1972, his father Muhammed Amin Lakhani assumed leadership of the firm and grew it over three decades into a powerhouse of civil, criminal and constitutional law. Muhammed Amin Lakhani further distinguished himself in bar politics, being elected President of the Karachi Bar Association — one of the largest bar associations in Asia — on five separate occasions, and serving as Vice Chair of the Sindh Bar Council.
Muhammed Umer Lakhani began his own legal career in April 2001 as an associate at M/s M.A.I. Lakhani & Co., even before enrolling in his law degree. He subsequently joined M/s Abid S. Zuberi and Asghar N. Faruqui — a prominent litigation firm — where he assisted Barrister Abid S. Zuberi in high-profile matters before the Sindh High Court, the Lahore High Court, and the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
In 2004, he was awarded his LLB by the University of Karachi through Sindh Madressah Law College, graduating with third position in his law finals. He remained with M/s Abid S. Zuberi and Asghar N. Faruqui until 2013, when he returned to M/s M.A.I. Lakhani & Co. to join forces with his brother Muhammed Ali Lakhani. He enrolled in the Sindh High Court in 2007 and in the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2016. In 2024, he established his own chamber. He has dozens of reported judgments spanning a broad range of legal issues and excels in civil litigation, land and property matters, contractual disputes, corporate and commercial issues, taxation, constitutional petitions, and regulatory disputes.
